Languages

Some of the Celtic languages are confusing. What we think of as one of the oldest of these was Gaelic. It was spoken in both Scotland and Ireland and presumably at one time these were the same. But languages change over time and what is now called Irish Gaelic is similar to, but not identical with, what is called Scottish Gaelic. It is not always obvious from the title of a book which is meant. We have clarified these for the descriptions by examining the books.

Modern Irish is derived from, but is not identical with, the original Irish Gaelic. Modern Scots or Scottish is not Gaelic but is a (presumably Gaelic-influenced) derivative of English.
