The Clanrye synthetic chanter reeds require no break-in period as do cane reeds, and are much less affected by moisture problems than are cane reeds.
The sound of these reeds has been improved significantly since they were first introduced, however their sound is still not equal to that of a well set up cane reed; the top hand particularly is still not equal to a good cane reed. Also unlike cane reeds, it is not possible to adjust the strength of the reed; you should order a reed in the strength that you expect to play.
In spite of all this, their sound is much better than a poorly set up cane reed, and can be a reasonable choice for beginners who have no access to someone who can help them with adjusting cane reeds; they can also be a reasonable choice for more experienced pipers to use as a backup reed under very adverse weather conditions when it may not be possible to get a cane reed to sound good.
